Fucking Awesome - Innerpartysystem

Come through the door

A darkened room
She draws white lines to set the mood

So begin the lyrics to perhaps my all-time favorite song, "Last Night in Brooklyn" by Innerpartysystem. A symphony of bass beats and ominously catchy synth riffs, this masterpeice of a song is exactly what you would expect to hear at a dark dance club in downtown Chicago, and its lyrics telling of lust and seduction only reinforce this feeling. The beat is slow and powerful, not like your standard club beat, but with a certain darkness that makes it all the more real.

The vocals, while not displaying any notable talent, suit the song and mood perfectly, as the singer's smooth yet desperate delivery creates the feeling of urban lust that drives the song's mood. Every verse is a steady buildup to a climactic chorus, and the final chorus smashes you into a neon-lit oblvion at which point you are down on your knees, begging for more.

"Last Night in Brooklyn" is the perfect song to drive down a skyspcraper-laden metropolis at night. Imagine everyone moving to synchronized beats, late night in your Scion as neon signs pass you by. You will not find a song that better captures the mood.

Awesome - MGMT

I love MGMT (but I have to say, I'm mostly a single junkie), and Justice's remix of their single "Electric Feel" is even better than the original. The composition is excellent and very professional, as though MGMT had wanted it that way. The song is 5:27 long, and every second is enjoyable (except perhaps the brief silence at 4:35) and keeps your attention. I highly recommend this song to everyone, whether you have never heard MGMT or Justice before or if you like either of their sounds. The combination here is extremely accessible and creates a stellar track.

Awesome - Arden

For my inagural post, I would like to introduce a small band called Arden out of Baltimore, MD. They are currently recording their debut full-length, but have provided a free download of their song "A Slow Spiral Geoffrey" on their Purevolume account.

Arden is a female-fronted piano-pop band in the vein of The Hush Sound, and "A Slow Spiral Geoffrey" follows The Hush Sound's formula quite well. Lead singer Laura Huebschman (try pronouncing that) has a very pleasing, strong voice, more in the vein of The Hush Sound's Greta Salpeter than Versaemerge's Sierra Kusterbeck. Though she sometimes truggles with the high notes, her lower range carries "A Slow Spiral Geoffrey" very well. Equipped with trumpets and organs in additon to piano and your standard pop-rock instrumentation, the song is perfect for any Spring playlist. It's easy to imagine this song as the soundtrack to an April sunrise over a green meadow with the birds chirping and bees buzzing. I only wish there was more!

Right now, Arden is quite unknown in the music community, but hopefully with their full-length they will gain some new fans. This band will blow up, so jump on the bandwagon before they explode!
